What Storm Damage Actually Looks Like

Most homeowners look up at the roof after a storm, do not see any missing shingles, and assume they are fine. Sometimes that is true. A lot of the time it is not.

Storm damage comes in forms that are easy to miss from the ground:

Lifted or creased shingles. Wind does not have to tear a shingle off to ruin it. If the wind bends the shingle up and breaks the adhesive seal, the shingle settles back down looking normal โ€” but it is no longer bonded, and the next moderate wind will take it.

Hail bruising. Hail impacts crush the granules and damage the mat underneath. The shingle looks intact at a glance, but the protective layer is compromised. A bruised shingle will fail years earlier than an undamaged one, and insurance covers it if documented before the damage ages out.

Displaced flashing. Wind and pressure changes can pull step flashing away from a wall, lift counter flashing out of a mortar joint, or shift valley metal. The roof will keep shedding water until the first driving rain from the wrong direction.

Ridge cap damage. The ridge takes the worst of the wind. Caps get cracked, loosened, or blown off entirely. From the ground, the ridge line still looks like a line โ€” you cannot see that the caps no longer seal the top course.

Punctures from flying debris. A piece of a neighbor’s fence, a loose patio umbrella, branches, or even someone else’s shingles can hit your roof hard enough to puncture it.

Tree limb impact. Even a limb that bounces off the roof without staying there can crack the decking or break a shingle course. We have seen plenty of “it only scratched the roof” calls that turned out to involve cracked plywood underneath.

Gutter and fascia damage. Storms that take shingles often take gutters with them, and the transition between roof and gutter is a common leak point when things get pulled loose.e phone than have you wait and find out the damage doubled overnight.

Post-Storm Roof Inspection โ€” What We Check

A real storm inspection is not a five-minute look from the driveway. Here is what a proper post-storm check covers.

The full shingle field. Walking the roof (where safe) to check for lifted tabs, creased shingles, missing granules, impact marks, and broken seal bonds. We lift suspect shingles by hand to confirm whether the adhesive strip is still bonded or has released.

Ridge and hip lines. Checking every ridge cap for cracks, displacement, or missing caps. Ridge vents are checked for wind intrusion.

All flashing details. Step flashing at sidewalls, counter flashing at chimneys and dormers, apron flashing above walls, valley metal, drip edge, and kickout flashing at wall-to-eave transitions.

Penetrations. Pipe boots, vent stacks, attic vents, skylights, and anywhere the roof is broken by a hole. These are the most common storm failure points because the sealing is dependent on intact materials.

The attic. When possible, we go into the attic and look for fresh water staining, daylight, damp insulation, or wet decking. A lot of storm damage shows up here first before the ceiling inside the house stains.

Gutters and downspouts. We check for granule buildup (a sign of shingle wear or hail impact), dents, separation from the fascia, and blockages from debris.

The surrounding property. Shingles or flashing pieces on the lawn, in the gutters, or in the yard are obvious evidence of missing roofing materials.

We document everything with photos โ€” overview, close-up, and any evidence of the cause. If you are filing an insurance claim, that documentation is what the adjuster wants to see.

Types of Storm Damage We Repair

Wind Damage Repair

Wind is the most common cause of storm damage on New Jersey roofs. Depending on gust speeds and roof condition, wind can lift adhesive seals, crease shingles, strip entire rows, or expose underlayment to UV and rain.

Our wind damage repair includes replacing lost shingles with a proper color and profile match, reseating lifted shingles, replacing creased shingles that will fail soon even if they look intact, and repairing any flashing or ridge cap that moved. We also check the surrounding field for secondary damage, which is the biggest thing most quick repairs miss.

Hail Damage Repair

Hail damage is assessed by impact count, size, and distribution. Small hail on an older roof can cause widespread bruising. Large hail can crack shingles outright. Either way, the fix is shingle replacement in the affected area and a full inspection of metal components (vents, flashing, gutters) that also take impact damage.

Hail damage is almost always an insurance claim. We document the impact pattern, test-square areas, and provide the photos and written scope the adjuster needs.

Tree Damage Repair

Tree damage ranges from a small limb that scraped a few shingles to a full trunk that crushed a section of roof. Our repair scope depends on what we find:

  • Surface scraping or broken shingles โ€” shingle replacement, seal check, any flashing damage addressed
  • Impact punctures โ€” remove damaged shingles, assess and replace decking as needed, re-felt, re-shingle, match into surrounding field
  • Structural impact โ€” when rafters or trusses are affected, we work with the homeowner and, if needed, a structural engineer, to scope the full repair

After a major tree impact, the first call is often to emergency service for stabilization and tarping. The permanent repair follows once the tree is removed and the scope is clear.

Rain and Wind-Driven Water Damage

Not all storm damage starts at a visible failure point. Heavy wind-driven rain can push water sideways under shingle edges, into ridge vents, around chimney flashing, and through gaps that are completely dry in normal weather. These leaks show up during or right after the storm and disappear afterward โ€” but the water damage inside the house is real and ongoing.

We trace these leaks to the actual entry point and fix the underlying issue โ€” usually a flashing detail or an aging sealant that needs replacement.

Ice Dam and Winter Storm Damage

Heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles create ice dams at the eaves that push meltwater backward under the shingle line. The water finds the path of least resistance, which is usually an old flashing seam or a gap in the underlayment. Repairs involve stopping the active leak, replacing damaged materials, and often adding ice-and-water shield at the eaves if it was not installed originally.

Debris Impact Damage

Storms move things. Patio furniture, grills, toys, tree limbs, loose fencing, and pieces of other people’s roofs all become projectiles at 50+ mph. We repair punctures, dents, and displacement caused by flying debris, and document the cause for insurance.

The Insurance Claim Question

A lot of storm damage repair involves homeowner’s insurance. Here is what we can and cannot do with that.

What we do:

  • Inspect the roof and identify storm-related damage
  • Document everything with clear photos
  • Provide a written scope of work and estimate
  • Separate storm damage from pre-existing wear in the documentation
  • Explain what we found in plain English so you can discuss it with your adjuster
  • Complete the repair once the claim is settled

What we do not do:

  • File the claim on your behalf
  • Negotiate with the insurance company
  • Tell you to “meet your deductible” through padded repairs
  • Promise your claim will be approved

We are roofing contractors. That is the line. What we will do is give you honest, documented information so you can make the call yourself or work with a public adjuster if you choose. Most homeowners find that our documentation alone is enough to have a straightforward conversation with their insurance company.

One more thing worth knowing: insurance claims for storm damage have a time limit. Most policies require claims within one year of the damage, sometimes less. If you are reading this months after a storm and wondering whether to still report it, call us and get it inspected soon. The clock matters.

Our Storm Damage Repair Process

1. Free Post-Storm Inspection

Call us after a storm and we will come out and inspect the roof at no charge. We check everything โ€” shingles, flashing, ridge, penetrations, attic, and the ground around the house. You get an honest assessment of what we found.

2. Written Scope and Documentation

If there is damage worth repairing, you get a written scope of work, a cost estimate, and photo documentation. If the damage looks insurance-worthy, the documentation is formatted for a claim conversation.

3. Temporary Stabilization (If Needed)

If the roof is actively leaking or exposed, we can tarp and stabilize the same day. Emergency work is separate from the permanent repair.

4. Insurance Coordination Window

If you are filing a claim, we wait for the adjuster to complete the inspection before starting permanent repairs. We can be on site during the adjuster visit if that helps.

5. Permanent Repair

Once the scope is approved (by you, by insurance, or both), we schedule the repair, source materials, and complete the work. Our crew protects your property, cleans up thoroughly, and leaves the site the way they found it.

6. Final Walkthrough and Guarantee

We review the completed repair with you and provide documentation of the 1-year workmanship guarantee. If anything we repaired fails within that window, we come back and fix it.

Why Homeowners Choose E Pro Construction for Storm Damage Work

John, the owner and Master Mason since 1997, personally inspects storm damage jobs and oversees the crew. Signs You Should Schedule a Storm Damage Inspection

Call us for a free inspection if any of the following apply:

  • A major wind, hail, or thunderstorm event passed through your area in the last several months
  • You see shingle pieces or granules in your gutters or yard
  • You notice new stains on interior ceilings or walls, even small ones
  • Neighbors are getting roof work done after the same storm
  • You hear a roofing company is “in the area” doing claims โ€” always good to get a second, honest opinion
  • Your roof is more than 10 years old and you have not had it checked after a recent storm
  • A limb, branch, or debris landed on the roof, even if nothing looked damaged

There is no charge for the inspection, and there is no pressure to repair. If the roof is fine, we will tell you it is fine.

Storm Damage Repair Costs

Final cost depends on the type of damage, the square footage affected, material matching, roof access, and whether decking or structural members are involved. Typical ranges for storm-related work in New Jersey:

  • Wind damage repair (localized): $400โ€“$1,200
  • Wind damage repair (multiple sections or large field): $1,200โ€“$3,500+
  • Hail damage repair (small area): $500โ€“$1,500
  • Hail damage (full slope or roof replacement): Usually insurance-driven; scope varies widely
  • Tree limb impact repair (no structural damage): $600โ€“$2,500
  • Tree impact with decking replacement: $1,200โ€“$4,000+
  • Ridge cap replacement after wind loss: $300โ€“$900
  • Flashing reseat or replacement after storm: $400โ€“$1,200
  • Emergency tarping and stabilization: $250โ€“$600

When insurance is involved, the homeowner typically pays the deductible and insurance pays the balance, depending on the policy. We do not inflate scopes to make deductibles disappear โ€” that is insurance fraud, and we do not work that way.

These are estimates. Final cost depends on the actual conditions we find on the roof. Every job gets a free written estimate before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my storm damage covered by insurance? Usually yes, if it is clearly storm-caused and reported within the policy’s time window. Wind, hail, and fallen-tree damage are typically covered. Wear and tear, neglected maintenance, and previous bad repairs are not. We can tell you what we are seeing, but your policy language and your adjuster make the final call.

How long do I have to file a claim? Most New Jersey homeowner’s policies require claims within one year of the damage, sometimes less. Check your specific policy, and do not wait โ€” it is much easier to document fresh damage than damage that is six months old and has weathered further.

Do you do insurance claim inspections? We inspect the roof, document what we find, and provide the photos and written scope. We do not file the claim or negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf.

Will you meet my deductible? No. We price the job based on the actual repair cost. Inflating estimates to cover a homeowner’s deductible is insurance fraud, and we do not do it. What we will do is give you an honest price and let you handle the deductible with your insurer the normal way.

My neighbor’s roofer said my whole roof needs to be replaced. Do you agree? We would need to see the roof. Sometimes full replacement is the right call, and sometimes it is not. We will give you a straight answer after we inspect it ourselves.

How soon after a storm should I call? As soon as it is safe. Fresh damage is easier to document, easier to repair before secondary damage sets in, and easier to file on insurance. If the storm was recent, do not wait.

Do you provide emergency service for storm damage? Yes. If the damage is causing active leaks or exposing the interior of the house, call (862) 232-6765 for 24/7 emergency response. See our Emergency Roof Repair page for details.

Are you licensed and insured? Yes. E Pro Construction is fully licensed and insured in New Jersey under NJ License #13VH12693500.
